The Challenge

A consortium of Kenyan tech companies and education foundations wanted to introduce coding to primary school pupils as part of Kenya's digital literacy agenda. However, existing coding platforms were designed for Western contexts, relied on reliable internet connectivity, and assumed access to laptops or tablets. Most target schools had limited ICT infrastructure — some with just a handful of shared devices. Teachers had no coding background and were intimidated by the prospect of teaching programming.

Our Approach

ElimuPoint designed a gamified coding curriculum built entirely around the Kenyan context. Instead of abstract programming exercises, students solved problems relevant to their daily lives — coding a matatu route optimizer, creating a digital jua kali marketplace, or programming a virtual shamba irrigation system. The curriculum worked on low-resource devices and included extensive unplugged activities for classrooms without computers.

Key Features of the Solution

Culturally Rooted Game Worlds: Students progressed through themed game worlds inspired by Kenyan life — from Maasai Mara wildlife conservation simulations to Mombasa port logistics puzzles. Each world introduced new programming concepts through culturally familiar scenarios, dramatically improving engagement and retention.

Unplugged-to-Plugged Pathway: The curriculum began with unplugged activities — card games, physical puzzles, and group challenges that taught computational thinking without any technology. This built confidence in both students and teachers before introducing digital coding tools.

Block-Based Visual Coding: A custom Scratch-like visual programming environment was developed with Swahili language support and locally themed sprites and backgrounds. Students dragged and dropped code blocks to create animations, games, and simple apps.

Teacher Empowerment Kit: Recognizing that teachers were the key enablers, ElimuPoint created comprehensive lesson plans, facilitation guides, and a peer support WhatsApp community. Teachers needed no prior coding experience — the materials guided them step by step through each lesson while building their own confidence.

The Results

The programme reached 5,000+ pupils across 50 schools in Nairobi, Mombasa, and Kisumu. The 94% engagement rate was unprecedented for an extracurricular STEM programme. Students showed a 3x improvement in problem-solving assessments. Most remarkably, participation among girls exceeded 55%, challenging the assumption that coding is a male-dominated field. Several students went on to win national and regional coding competitions, and the programme was featured by the Kenya ICT Authority as a model initiative.

Looking Forward

The curriculum is being expanded to Junior Secondary level with text-based coding in Python. A teacher certification programme is scaling the initiative to 200 additional schools. ElimuPoint is also developing an AI-powered coding tutor that provides personalized hints and challenges based on each student's learning pace.
