Developing a mandatory, interactive training programme on child safeguarding and protection for 10,000+ staff across a global international school network.
A network of 45 community-based organizations across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania needed to meet international donor requirements for safeguarding training. Their staff worked directly with vulnerable children and adults in diverse cultural contexts, yet most had never received formal safeguarding training. In-person workshops were impractical given the geographic spread, and existing generic online courses failed to address the specific cultural dynamics and legal frameworks of the East African context.
ElimuPoint assembled a cross-functional team of safeguarding experts, cultural advisors, and instructional designers to create a bespoke training programme. We conducted extensive stakeholder consultations across all three countries, gathering input from community workers, local leaders, and child protection officers to ensure the content was both culturally appropriate and practically relevant.

Scenario-Based Learning: Each module centered on realistic scenarios drawn from actual community contexts. Learners navigated complex situations involving child protection, gender-based violence, and power dynamics, making decisions at key branching points and receiving detailed feedback on their choices.
Multilingual Delivery: Content was developed in English, Swahili, Luganda, and French, with audio narration in all four languages. This ensured accessibility for staff with varying literacy levels and language preferences.
Certification & Compliance: The programme included pre- and post-assessments with a minimum passing score. Successful learners received digital certificates that mapped to international safeguarding standards, satisfying donor compliance requirements.
Reporting Framework: An integrated reporting feature allowed staff to practice using the organization's safeguarding reporting procedures within the training itself. This hands-on practice significantly improved real-world reporting confidence and accuracy.
Within 6 months, 3,500+ staff across the network completed the programme, achieving a 97% compliance rate with donor safeguarding requirements. Post-training assessments showed a 78% improvement in safeguarding knowledge scores. Safeguarding incident reporting increased by 150% — not because incidents were increasing, but because staff now had the knowledge and confidence to identify and report concerns appropriately. Three major donors cited the programme as a model for their global partner networks.
The programme is being expanded to include specialized modules on digital safeguarding, disability inclusion, and safeguarding in humanitarian response contexts. ElimuPoint is also developing a refresher training series and a community of practice platform for ongoing peer learning.
