The Challenge

An international NGO focused on youth empowerment identified digital literacy as a critical gap in underserved communities across East Africa. Many young people — particularly women and girls — had limited access to digital skills training, hindering their employment prospects and economic participation. The NGO needed a scalable, culturally sustainable programme that could be delivered across multiple countries with varying levels of infrastructure.

Our Solution

ElimuPoint developed a modular digital literacy curriculum comprising three tiers: foundational (device basics, internet navigation), intermediate (productivity tools, digital communication), and advanced (data literacy, online safety, digital entrepreneurship). The curriculum was designed for facilitated delivery in community centres, with supplementary self-paced content accessible via basic smartphones.

"This programme has changed lives. Young people who had never used a computer are now running online businesses. ElimuPoint's approach of combining cultural relevance with practical skills made all the difference."

Cultural Localisation

Every module was localised for four languages — English, Kiswahili, French, and Amharic. Beyond translation, ElimuPoint's team ensured that examples, case studies, and scenarios reflected local contexts. Digital entrepreneurship modules featured real success stories from East African entrepreneurs, making the content relatable and aspirational.

Train-the-Trainer Model

ElimuPoint trained 150 community facilitators through a comprehensive 40-hour programme. These facilitators became local champions, delivering the curriculum and providing ongoing support. A dedicated platform enabled facilitators to share resources, report challenges, and access updated materials in real-time.

Impact & Outcomes

Over 18 months, the programme reached 10,000+ beneficiaries across Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, and Ethiopia. 72% of graduates reported using digital skills in their daily lives within 3 months of completion. Employment rates among programme alumni were 35% higher than comparable non-participants. The programme received commendation from the African Union's Digital Transformation Strategy committee.
