The Challenge

Kenya's transition from the 8-4-4 education system to the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) required a fundamental reimagining of how learning materials were designed and delivered. Publishers and educational institutions struggled to move beyond traditional content-heavy, teacher-centered materials to the learner-centered, competency-driven approaches demanded by CBC. Many lacked in-house instructional design expertise, and the tight KICD approval timelines left little room for trial and error.

Our Approach

ElimuPoint established a dedicated CBC Instructional Design Unit that worked embedded within partner organizations. Rather than simply reviewing content, our team co-created materials alongside subject matter experts, ensuring knowledge transfer at every stage. We developed a proprietary CBC Alignment Framework that mapped every learning activity to specific KICD competencies, strands, and assessment criteria.

"Before ElimuPoint, we were essentially putting old wine in new bottles — reformatting our old textbooks and calling them CBC-aligned. Their team showed us what true competency-based design looks like. It transformed how we think about education."

Key Features of the Solution

CBC Alignment Framework: A systematic tool that mapped every learning activity, assessment, and resource to specific CBC competencies. Publishers used this framework to self-evaluate content before submission to KICD, dramatically reducing rejection rates.

Activity-Based Design Templates: ElimuPoint created a library of reusable design templates for hands-on activities, group projects, and community-engagement tasks that embodied CBC's emphasis on practical, real-world learning. These templates could be customized across subject areas while maintaining pedagogical integrity.

Digital Enhancement Layer: For publishers moving to hybrid print-digital formats, we designed interactive digital companions that extended textbook content with simulations, video demonstrations, and self-assessment quizzes — all aligned to the same competency framework.

Capacity Building Workshops: Beyond content creation, we ran intensive workshops for editorial teams, building internal instructional design capacity. Participants earned ElimuPoint CBC Design certification upon completion.

The Results

Over 150 titles across 12 subject areas were redesigned with full CBC alignment. KICD approval rates for partner materials increased from 45% to 94%. Eight publishing houses built internal instructional design capabilities, with 35 editors earning ElimuPoint certification. Student engagement surveys in pilot schools showed a 62% improvement when using the redesigned materials compared to previous editions.

Looking Forward

ElimuPoint is expanding the programme to support Junior Secondary and Senior Secondary content development. We're also developing an AI-powered CBC alignment checker that will allow publishers to automatically assess their materials against KICD standards.
