The Challenge

A development agency working with Kenya's Ministry of Agriculture needed to modernize how extension officers delivered training to smallholder farmers. Traditional in-person field visits were expensive, infrequent, and couldn't scale. Extension officers often lacked up-to-date knowledge on climate-smart agricultural practices, and farmers in remote areas received little to no support during critical growing seasons.

Our Approach

ElimuPoint designed a multi-layered digital learning ecosystem that equipped extension officers with mobile training tools while also providing direct-to-farmer content in local languages. We worked closely with agricultural scientists, extension officers, and farmer cooperatives to ensure content was practical, contextually relevant, and accessible on basic smartphones.

"The training modules ElimuPoint created were unlike anything we'd seen — real farm scenarios, local crop varieties, and content in Swahili and Kikuyu. Our extension officers finally had tools that matched the reality of Kenyan agriculture."

Key Features of the Solution

Visual Learning Modules: Recognizing varying literacy levels, the content relied heavily on video demonstrations, infographics, and photo-based step-by-step guides. Farmers could watch short clips on soil preparation, pest management, and post-harvest handling directly on their phones.

SMS & WhatsApp Integration: Seasonal reminders and micro-learning tips were delivered through SMS for feature phone users and WhatsApp for smartphone users. This ensured continuous learning touchpoints beyond formal training sessions.

Offline-First Architecture: All training content was designed to work offline, syncing data when connectivity was available. Extension officers could download modules in town and use them in the field without data costs — a critical consideration for budget-constrained programmes.

Farmer Progress Tracking: A simple dashboard allowed extension officers to log farm visits, track which farmers had received training, and record adoption of recommended practices. This data fed into programme-level analytics for impact measurement.

The Results

Over two agricultural seasons, the programme reached 2,000+ smallholder farmers across 6 counties. Farmers who engaged with the digital content reported an average 35% improvement in crop yields. Extension officer reach increased by 400% — each officer could now support 4x more farmers through the digital tools. The programme was recognized by the FAO as an innovative model for digital agricultural extension in Africa.

Looking Forward

The programme is expanding to include livestock management modules, market access information, and a peer-to-peer farmer knowledge exchange platform. ElimuPoint is also exploring the use of AI-powered crop disease identification through the mobile app.
